Section 2: Volume & Sizing Rules
2. Volume Limits: The 3 cubic metres (3m³) Rule
City of Canning enforcement officers monitor collection piles. Exceeding volume limits or placing prohibited items risks non-collection tags and litter compliance infringement notices.
⚠️ Key Set-Out Requirements:
Total verge pile volume cannot exceed
3 cubic metres (3m³)
(approximately two standard box trailers). Keep piles neatly stacked at least 1m away from public utilities, street signs, and council verge trees.
- Maximum 3 cubic metres (3m³) of clean garden waste per household.
- Branches up to 1.5m in length and maximum 150mm in diameter, stacked neatly with cut ends facing the road.
- No street tree prunings: City of Canning street trees are protected; residents cannot prune council-owned verge trees.
- No soil, turf sods, rocks, concrete, or sand mixed into green waste piles.
- Do not obstruct footpaths, cycle tracks, or school crossing visibility lines.

Section 5: FAQs
5. Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: How many verge collections does the City of Canning provide each year?
The City of Canning provides two scheduled green waste collections and one general bulk waste collection annually across four designated collection zones.
Q2: Can I prune council street trees on my verge in Canning Vale?
No. Under City of Canning bylaws, street trees on public verges are council assets. Pruning street trees without written permission is prohibited. Backyard Roo trims private boundary trees and hedges that encroach over fence lines.
Q3: What size can branches be for Canning green waste collection?
Branches must be no longer than 1.5 metres and no thicker than 150mm in diameter so they can be fed directly into commercial woodchippers.
Q4: Can I place lawn clippings and leaves loose on the verge?
Loose leaves and grass clippings should go into your green FOGO lid bin. Very large yard cleanups can be hauled away directly by Backyard Roo using our dedicated green waste trailer service.
